Best Photo Locations in Missoula, MT: A Local Photographer’s Guide for Families, Couples, and Portrait Sessions

If you’ve ever typed “best photo locations in Missoula” or “best family photo locations in Missoula” into Google and felt a little overwhelmed by the options, you’re not alone.

It’s one of the questions I get asked the most by families planning photos, couples wanting something that feels like them, seniors looking for the right backdrop, and parents trying to figure out where their kids will actually cooperate for more than a few minutes.

So I put together this guide.

Not a generic “top 10 Instagram spots” list, but the places I personally return to again and again because I know how the light moves through them, how much walking is involved, and what kind of session each one is really built for.

One thing before we dive in: these are simply my favorite suggestions, not your only options. If you already have a location in mind, whether that is a family property, a meaningful trail, your own backyard, a cabin, a river spot, or somewhere downtown, I am always happy to start there.

Here are nine of my go-to photo locations in and around Missoula, listed in the order I personally like and recommend them.

1. Council Grove State Park: Best For Big, Golden, Classic Montana Views

If you want that wide-open, golden-grass, “this could only be Montana” feeling, Council Grove State Park is hard to beat.

It is spacious, scenic, and easy to move through, which makes it one of my top picks for family photos in Missoula, especially when you have a range of ages, young kids, elderly family members, or less mobile guests in the group.

2. Blue Mountain: Best For Fields, Pines, And Mountain Backdrops

Blue Mountain is one of the most versatile locations I shoot at near Missoula. You can get tall grass, pine trees, mountain views, and a relaxed outdoor feel all in one spot.

It works well for families, couples, seniors, portraits, and sessions with dogs. There is enough space for kids to move, but it still gives you that big Missoula landscape feeling.

There is a slight uphill walk, about half a mile depending on where we go, so it is best for people who do not mind a little movement.

Good To Know: Blue Mountain has great variety with mountain views, trees, grass, and views toward the city, but it does include a slight uphill walk.

3. Maclay Flats: Best For An Easygoing, Natural Session

Maclay Flats is consistently one of my favorite recommendations for relaxed family sessions. The walking is easy, the setting is calm, and it has that soft river-area feel that photographs beautifully without trying too hard.

This is a great location when you want photos that feel natural, simple, and connected. It also works well for couples, seniors, maternity sessions, and portraits where you want a softer outdoor look.

Good To Know: Maclay Flats is a strong year-round option and works especially well when you want an easy, natural location.

4. Blackfoot River: Best For A Wilder, Adventurous Feel Without An Actual Hike

If you want your photos to feel a little more rugged and outdoorsy, think tall grass, pine forest, and open patches of light, the Blackfoot River area is a great option.

It gives you a more natural Montana feel without turning the session into a big hike. The walk is short and flat, which keeps it approachable while still feeling a little more adventurous than a park in town.

5. Private Wooded Residence: Best For A Quiet, Private Setting

This is a private property I have access to, with trees, garden space, lawn areas, and a tucked-away, playful feel.

Because it is not a public park, it tends to work beautifully for families with young kids who want room to be a little wild and silly in front of the camera. It is also a great option if you want something quieter, greener, and more private.

Best Light: Flexible throughout the day because of shaded pockets
Feel: Wooded, green, playful, private, and a little more unique than a public park

6. Rock Creek Valley Of The Moon: Best For A Scenic Mini Getaway

About 30 minutes outside Missoula, Rock Creek Valley of the Moon has a canyon and valley feel that makes the session feel like a small scenic getaway without committing to a full day trip.

This is one of my favorite options when clients want something more intentional, scenic, and a little more adventurous than a standard park session.

When you want something pretty and natural but do not want to drive far, DNRC Land is a simple, convenient choice.

It has open grass, pine trees, light shade, and a clean outdoor look. It works well when you want a natural location without making the session feel complicated.

Depending on the season, there may be some walking through tall, dry grass, so that is something to keep in mind for outfits and shoes.

Pattee Canyon is a classic for a reason: tall pines, filtered light, soft grass, and a cozy forest backdrop close to Missoula.

It is a great choice if you want your photos to feel wooded, calm, and a little tucked away without traveling far. It can also be a nice summer option because the shade often keeps things cooler.

Not every session needs to be in a field or forest. Downtown Missoula brings brick, texture, storefronts, alleys, sidewalks, color, and city energy into the mix.

It is a great option for clients who want something more polished, modern, or different from the usual outdoor backdrop. It can also be a strong choice for extended families, elderly family members, or less mobile clients because it has sidewalks, nearby parking, and plenty of places to pause.
